WAFF: The Carnival
Dear Teachers and Friends,
We are a group of students from the NUS University Scholars Programme (USP) Volunteer Project working together to benefit children patients of KK Hospital’s Cleft and Craniofacial Centre. The centre and its associated support group works in unison to help children who are affected by cleft lip & palate and other craniofacial anomalies from birth.
Our aim is to provide the children and their families with psychosocial, emotional and educational support, as well as promote public education on the craniofacial conditions and social acceptance of people with craniofacial anomalies. Over the past year, we have organized monthly activities for the patients and their families to come together and have fun as well as to interact with each other. A small volunteer tutor network was set up to help some of the children from financially needy families. We have also successfully produced a play to raise funds for the support group activities as well as provided an opportunity for the children to perform.
As part of our continuous efforts to raise funds for the support group network as well as promote public awareness of cleft and other craniofacial conditions, we are collaborating with the NUS University Scholars Programme to organize WAFF: The Carnival, a National Inter-School Fundraising Competition. We hope to get students from your school to form teams of 5-10 to join this competition. Given a fixed amount of seed money, teams will have to exercise their creativity and business skills to set up a stall at the carnival and raise funds. All profits will go towards the support group. Through this competition, participants will get the opportunity to develop their entrepreneurship spirit while experiencing the warm and fuzzy feeling (WAFF) of sharing through the human touch at the same time. More information can be found on our website. http://uspstudent.nus.edu.sg/waff/
In order to provide the students with the business foundation, a business workshop for the participants will be held on the 23rd of February in NUS. Therefore we hope teams can sign up before the 22nd of February in order to benefit from the workshop. However, we will continue to accept registration of teams up to the 7th of March.
We have tried our best to contact all the secondary schools and junior colleges in Singapore through email and phone calls but responses have been lukewarm. Often a time, we were told to just send an email to the school email. With no idea whether the competition has been announced to the students, we are now appealing to our personal contacts within schools to support our cause by encouraging students to participate in the competition.
Our slogan is - ‘Feel the Fuzz, Take the Step, Bridge the Gap’. We have felt the fuzz and took the step. Together, I sincerely hope that you can join us to bridge the gap.
Thank you for your kind attention.
